Day 1 of 5

Rounding Third — Eyes on Home, Running Hard

Listen to Today's Devotional (2:45)
2 Timothy 4:7
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

When you round third base heading home, you don't celebrate yet.

You run. Hard.

Eyes locked on home plate. Head down. Legs pumping. Everything you've got left in the tank.

Because there might be a play. The ball might be coming. The catcher might be waiting. And if you slow down, if you ease up, if you assume you've got it made—you might not make it.

Paul wrote this at the end of his life. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

Past tense. Done. Finished. Completed.

But notice what he said first: "I have fought." Not "I coasted." Not "I relaxed." Not "I assumed."

He fought. All the way to the end.

That's what rounding third looks like. It's not the time to coast. It's not the time to celebrate prematurely. It's not the time to assume you've got it made.

It's the time to run harder than you've run all game.

You can see home plate. You're closer than you've ever been. But the game isn't over yet. The defense might still make a play. The ball might still beat you there.

So you dig in. You focus. You commit everything you have left to getting home safely.

Most people ease up when they round third. They've run so long, fought so hard, they think, "I'm close enough. I can coast from here."

And they get thrown out at home.

Paul didn't ease up. He fought. He finished. He kept the faith. Not just at the beginning. Not just in the middle. All the way to the end.

That's what finishing well looks like. Not perfect. Not without struggle. But focused. Committed. Running hard when you're tired. Pushing through when you want to quit.

You're rounding third. Home plate is in sight. But don't celebrate yet. Don't slow down yet. Don't ease up yet.

Run. With everything you've got. Eyes locked on home. Focused on one thing: getting there safely.

The celebration comes after you cross the plate. Right now? You run.

Are you running hard, or are you coasting toward the finish?

Reflection Questions

What would it take for you to run harder now than you've run all game? What's tempting you to coast when you should be sprinting?

Prayer

God, I can see home. I'm close. But I'm not there yet. And I'm tired. Everything in me wants to ease up. To coast. To assume I've got it made. But Paul fought all the way to the end. He didn't quit. He didn't slow down. He finished. So I'm running. Hard. Eyes locked on home. Focused on one thing: crossing that plate safely. Give me the strength to finish. Amen.
