His patient was a feverish 15-year-old boy who had been weakened by repeated bloodletting, the standard (and often harmful) treatment of the era. 4. 1785 – The First Fatal Air Crash
Less than two years after the Montgolfier brothers launched humanity into the skies, June 15 brought aviation's first tragedy. Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier, who had been the first human to fly in a hot-air balloon, attempted to cross the English Channel from France in a hybrid craft combining a hydrogen balloon with a hot-air balloon, a dangerously combustible pairing. Roughly half an hour into the flight, the balloon caught fire and plummeted near Wimereux on the French coast. Pilâtre de Rozier and his companion Pierre Romain were killed, becoming the first known fatalities in the history of flight. The very design flaw that doomed them, open flame next to flammable hydrogen, was a risk that more cautious aeronauts had already warned against. Their deaths were a sobering reminder that the conquest of the air would come at a cost. 5. 1844 – Goodyear Patents Vulcanized Rubber
Charles Goodyear was a man obsessed. Convinced that natural rubber could be transformed into a stable, useful material, he spent years in poverty, debt, and even debtors' prison, experimenting endlessly. Raw rubber was maddening: sticky and soft in summer heat, brittle and cracked in winter cold. On this day, Goodyear received U.S. Patent No. 3,633 for the solution he had stumbled upon, the process of vulcanization. By heating rubber with sulfur, Goodyear discovered that the material became strong, elastic, and weather-resistant. 6. 1878 – Muybridge Stops a Horse in Motion
For centuries, painters had argued over how a galloping horse actually moves its legs. Does it ever have all four hooves off the ground at once? The human eye simply could not see fast enough to know. On this day at a track in Palo Alto, California, photographer Eadweard Muybridge settled the debate with technology. Muybridge set up a row of cameras with tripwires triggered by the horse "Sallie Gardner" as she galloped past. 7. 1919 – Alcock and Brown Cross the Atlantic Non-Stop
When John Alcock and Arthur Brown bumped down into a peat bog at Clifden, Ireland, their modified Vickers Vimy bomber tipped nose-first into the mud, but they had done it. The two British aviators had just completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight, covering nearly 1,900 miles from St. John's, Newfoundland, in just under 16 hours. The flight was a brutal ordeal. Battling fog, snow, ice that forced Brown to climb out onto the wings, and a failing radio, the pair flew through the night with little more than basic instruments and raw nerve.
