About this song

The same story from the other side of the road, in Jesus's voice. He watched the rich young man walk away, then went on to pay the price Himself. The companion to Verse Twenty-Two.

Lyrics

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
There's a lamp behind his gate.
I can hear the keys. He's counting them again.
So I knock, and then I wait.
I don't break the lock. I didn't break it then.

[Verse 2]
At the end there was one thing,
one coat, woven in one piece, too good to tear.
Four men gambling in the spring
knelt and cast their lots for what I used to wear.

[Chorus]
I looked at him a long while,
and I paid the only thing he couldn't pay.
Nobody took it from Me.
I loved him, so I let them lead Me away.

[Verse 3]
Down the road in Jericho,
a short tax man climbed a sycamore to see.
I said I would stay. And so
he gave half away before I named a fee.

[Verse 4]
I watched him till he was gone.
I could hear his keys go ringing down the road.
Then I turned and carried on
to the city, to the hill, to all he owed.

[Instrumental Interlude]

[Bridge]
I would gather still,
like a hen beneath her wings.
But he has his will,
and his keys on iron rings.
There's no lower price.
So I paid it in his place.
Once, and never twice.
And I never turned My face.

[Verse 5 - Major Key]
He came running through the crowd,
every key he owned was ringing on his belt.
And he called Me good, too loud,
and I loved him long before he ever knelt.

[Final Chorus]
I looked at him a long while,
and I named the only thing he couldn't pay.
Nobody ran to stop him.
I loved him, and so I let him walk away.

[Outro]

[End]
