About this song
THE DISTURBING FUNCTION Found poetry from the physics of distance. Every line in this song was harvested from real scientific writing, the language left mostly intact and only lightly joined. Four fields were chosen because they seemed to have nothing to do with one another: the three-body problem, quantum entanglement, gravitational waves, and the dark-matter scaffolding of the cosmic web. None of the papers knew the others existed. They turned out to be telling the same story. Three bodies bound by gravity into motion no equation can predict. Two particles perfectly correlated across any distance, yet unable to send a single word between them. A ripple carrying the news of a collision a billion years gone. An invisible web holding every galaxy in place, without which they would simply drift apart. Four rigorous, unrelated descriptions of one thing: a bond you can measure but cannot trace, follow, or speak across. The title is a real term of art, the small perturbing term in the three-body equations, the thing that makes the clean solution impossible. It seemed like the right name for whatever it is in the universe that refuses to leave anything alone. The song doesn't end in the void. Buried in the chaos are islands of regularity, the figure-eight orbit where three bodies chase each other forever without flying apart. A fixed point in the tangle. Proof that some things, against the odds, hold. A companion piece to "Spooky Action at a Distance," in the same method and the same sphere.
Lyrics
Intro - Sequencer arpeggio builds alone, analog pads enter] [Verse 1 - Male Baritone, flat affect, spoken-sung] Three gravitating bodies and there's no closed form to find Eighteen coupled equations of the nonlinear kind A small disturbing function sends the orbits all astray Into a single escaping star and a bound binary someday [Verse 2] You measure your own particle, the outcome will be random The far companion particle is correlated, in tandem The no-communication theorem says you cannot send a word It only means a thing once the classical records are heard [Chorus] It's the disturbing function and it never lets you rest A small perturbing term in every system you would test Everything is bound to everything, the math is tight and true But the future isn't yours to read, and the signal won't get through [Verse 3] Two black holes were spiraling a billion years ago Ripples in the spacetime, an iconic chirping glow The inspiral, the merger, and the ringdown's fading sound Stretched and squeezed by femtometers, the information found [Instrumental Interlude - sequencer and analog synths, evolving, the chirp decaying into pulse] [Verse 4] An invisible scaffold holds the filaments and voids Gravitationally bound, and there's no light that it deploys We are effectively blind to the web that binds it all And without it every galaxy would simply disperse and fall [Chorus] It's the disturbing function and it never lets you rest A small perturbing term in every system you would test Everything is bound to everything, the math is tight and true But the future isn't yours to read, and the signal won't get through [Bridge - Quieter, pulse drops to a single low sequence, Mellotron choir] From the smallest entanglement to the widest cosmic web From a quantum little fluctuation to the filaments that spread It's the same unspoken sentence that the universe repeats You are bound to what you cannot see across the dark between [Verse 5 - pulse rebuilds underneath] But the chaos isn't total, there are islands of regularity Three bodies in a figure-eight, a choreographic clarity They move within a single closed and periodic embrace A fixed point in the tangle, one still and ordered place [Chorus - full pulse, pads wide] It's the disturbing function and it never lets you rest A small perturbing term in every system you would test Everything is bound to everything, the math is tight and true But the future isn't yours to read, and the signal won't get through [Outro - sequencer continues, vocal fragments over the pulse, long fade] It's the disturbing function It's the disturbing function Everything is bound But the signal won't get through [sequencer fades alone] [End]
